Have your say

The Neighbourhood Plan is a community plan to manage development in the next twenty years to maintain a balance of economy, environment and social needs. Truro City and Kenwyn Parish joined together to work on the plan and asked Creative Edge to produce a leaflet which would provide the opportunity to gather public opinion. We went on to disguise a Scout trailer into a display for a day in Truro gathering more opinion and highlighting the opportunity to have your say in how Truro and Kenwyn Parish are developed. The event sparked a lot of interest from a diverse range of the community.

Just Browsing

Topics: New media

With mobile phones doing so much more than making a phone call and with the introduction of new products such as the ipad, website browsing habits are changing.

Looking at recent Google Analytic results from a range of our websites has given us a clear indication that this is the case. Visitors have increased overall over the the last year but the most dramatic increases have been in the numbers of website visitors using ipads, iphones, androids and other mobile devices. On average there has been a 500% increase in visitors using ipads, 250% using iphones and 500% using androids when comparing January 2011 with the same month in 2012.

This indicates a clear shift in numbers away from the traditional desktop PC and reinforces the need to make sure your online presence caters for visitors using new mobile devices. This trend is not limited to the youth market either with one website whose target audience is the over 60's seeing the same big increases.

Creative Edge are happy to discuss these exciting developments with any existing or new clients, just call 01872 260023 to arrange an appropriate time to discuss your online options.

Rob Trethewey, the chairman of St Erme Parish Council, which covers the Trispen area, said: "This is fantastic news, a very important step forward for Trispen. It's the best Christmas present the village could have been given.

Judgemental

Topics: Creative Edge Sponsorship

Creative Edge were delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor a category in the DESIGNED. IN CORNWALL exhibition at University College Falmouth.

The event showcased the outstanding design and technology work produced by students at schools and Higher Education colleges across Cornwall and is the only large-scale exhibition of its kind in the country.

The high standard meant that Senior Designer Leo Stockley had his work cut out when judging the Graphic Product category, but a bauhaus inspired chess board by Joe Cooke of Roseland School was the stand out for its consistency of style. Highly Commended went to Amy Johnstone of Camborne Science & Community College Academy – whose Shoe as a promotional item for a bad was superb. There was a huge variety of inspirational work, from textiles and fashion to food technology. Some of the stand outs in various catergories included the coffin wardrobe, washing machine BBQ and typography on the reading chair (see images below).

The One That Didn't Get Away

Topics: Creative Edge work

This simple initiative aims to reduce marine litter by involving one of the key stakeholders, the fishing industry. Member vessels are given hard-wearing bags to collect marine litter that accumulates in their nets during fishing operations. Filled bags are returned to the quayside in participating ports and moved to secure containers ready for safe and responsible disposal.

As well as the obvious environmental impact of marine litter, research has shown it costs the fishing industry on average, £10,000 per boat, each year, through contamination of catches, broken gear, and fouled propellers. Vessels surveyed, spent an average of 41 hours a year removing marine debris from fishing gear. These are costs that fishing vessels cannot afford to absorb. Participation in the project will contribute towards the permanent removal of debris and marine litter from fishing grounds, which not only makes good financial sense, but also helps fishing vessels meet the requirements of the Responsible Fishing Scheme.

Fishing for Litter South West aims to establish a network of 6 harbours, recruit a minimum of 60 fishing vessels and recover 200 tonnes of marine litter. A percentage of the waste that comes ashore will be monitored to try to identify the source of the litter and establish if there are any regional differences. The information will also be fed into international monitoring programs such as OSPAR’s Marine Litter Monitoring Working Group.

The project is being co-ordinated locally by a Project Officer based at Seafood Cornwall Training in Newlyn and overseen internationally by KIMO UK. See what Creative Edge has done for Fishing For Litter

Introducing the typographer

Topics: Creative Edge work, Design

A few months back we had the pleasure of stumbling upon a talented typographer by the name of Jos Buiverga. In particular a beautiful font by the name of Museo which can be found, amongst others, at exljbris Font Foundry. We recently used this typeface on the branding of Keep It Cornish which Jos has been kind enough to put up on his website. Visit the site to see this and other fine example of typography.

Forget freaky Friday, go get fundraising!

Topics: Creative Edge work, Creative Edge PR

Friday the 13th is normally a day to avoid, but not this Friday as it sees the annual return of Red Nose Day and an outbreak of red painted fingernails in the studio! Red Nose Day serves as a timely reminder that businesses all have a role to play in the wider community. The money raised by many thousands people, goes not just towards worthy projects overseas, but also projects much closer to home. Last night the BBC local news ran a short piece about the Women's Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre in Bodmin who have received funding towards its Art programme. Last year Creative Edge worked together with the WRSC to produce an inspirational book containing many thought provoking, emotional and highly creative pieces of art and poetry submitted by the young women who worked with professional artists.

You can see the full news article on the BBC site or take a look at some page samples here.

Children Inspired By New Career Card Game

Topics: Creative Edge PR

Truro based design consultancy Creative Edge has worked with the education charity Ablaze  and major sponsors GE to support Bristol City Councils ‘My Future My Choice' programme, by creating a unique teaching aid to help raise the career aspirations of primary and secondary school children.

It is now on trial in Bristol schools with the aim of being rolled out to schools across the UK. See what schools are saying about the cards. Originated by Creative Edge's design team this unique and fun card game helps teachers and GE Corporate Citizenship volunteers when they go into schools to give them a broader understanding of the "World of Work".  This is particularly relevant at a time when government figures show a falling knowledge of work options amongst younger children.

The pack of 52 illustrated, colourful and graphically designed cards each contain easily readable information about individual careers, ranking the multitude of different skills needed for any profession and suggesting family groupings with similar skills. It was important to show that no skill or profession was better than any other profession, just different, and that similar skills were needed for lots of different careers.

There are rules for five games that can be played with the one pack, but the children have already made up their own game whilst trialling the cards, showing how involved they became.

The teachers love them too as they can be used in many different ways, either individually or in groups, to stimulate discussion and inspire their pupils about future career choices and the vast range of options available.

Melinda Rickett, partner at Creative Edge said: "We were approached by GE, ABLAZE and Bristol City Council to come up with some ideas to help the company's Corporate Citizenship programme volunteers discuss career aspirations with local school children. We looked at ideas surrounding why people chose certain lines of work and the skills needed to fulfil these roles and then came up with the ‘My Future My Choice' cards theme to demonstrate the range of careers available and the skills required."

Ablaze is a charity that is involved in a wide range of educational projects nationally.  GE has taken the lead in the My Future My Choice project that started with children's performances at Bristol's Old Vic to broaden their horizons when it came to career choices.

The majority of children in year 5 in Bristol state schools attended these performances. 2131 nine and ten year olds completed a pre and post performance survey to give a snapshot of what job thought they might do in the future.  The survey showed that after only a brief look at some of the jobs available in the world, children's aspirations will shift away from a stereotypically narrow band of jobs towards more realistic or professional aspirations. 203 fewer children wanted to be footballers, hairdressers or builders after the one hour show. In July 2009, after a full year working with the programme's volunteers and resources these children will be surveyed again.

Ruth Bedingham, from the GE Corporate Citizenship programme said: "Our previous invovlement in the My Future My Choice project demonstrated that we had begun to make progress in broadening children's expectations and wanted to build on this.

"We needed to make it interesting for our volunteers and the children when they went into schools, so approached Creative Edge who had already done a great job with the iCount project which launched the GE Corporate Citizenship volunteer scheme earlier this year.

"The results have been fantastic and Creative Edge has produced a really imaginative piece of work, which will no doubt be an excellent tool in helping younger children open their minds to a range of exciting careers beyond their existing knowledge."

GE has a history of philanthropic work and through schemes like My Future My Choice is keen to inspire children to do the best they can and help build a work force for the future.

"We believe that it is vital businesses get involved in education to inspire, share real world experiences and encourage children to look outside of their own daily lives or what they see on television," said Ruth Bedingham. "Through these cards and the My Future My Choice scheme we will hopefully give children the confidence to strive for any career they want regardless of background."
